Tasiilaq is the largest town in East Greenland, situated on Ammassalik Island beside a sheltered fjord and surrounded by steep mountains. Its remote setting gives the town a distinct character, with colorful houses scattered across hilly terrain and waterways leading into a rugged Arctic landscape. Tasiilaq serves as a base for exploring the surrounding fjords, glaciers, valleys, and smaller settlements. The town is reached through Kulusuk, followed by a helicopter or seasonal boat transfer, reflecting its geographic isolation from Greenland’s larger population centers.

Local identity remains closely connected to East Greenlandic Inuit traditions, particularly hunting, fishing, dog sledding, and handicraft. The Ammassalik Museum, housed in the town’s former church, displays traditional masks, tupilak figures, kayaks, sleds, and other objects associated with daily life in the region. A reconstructed peat-walled house provides another view of traditional winter living. Tasiilaq is also one of the Greenlandic communities where Inuit drum dancing can still be experienced. Local artisans at workshops such as Stunk continue the region’s tradition of carving and decorative craftsmanship.

The landscape around Tasiilaq provides access to several distinctive Arctic environments. The Flower Valley offers a walking route through low vegetation and mountain scenery close to town, while the surrounding hills provide views across the coast and fjords. Boat excursions can reach the Sermilik Icefjord, where icebergs from several glaciers gather in the water. Summer activities include hiking, kayaking, sailing, and whale watching, while winter brings opportunities for dog sledding, snowshoeing, skiing, and viewing the northern lights. Local guides are important for excursions beyond the immediate town because of changing ice and Arctic wildlife conditions.

Tasiilaq’s food traditions reflect the practical use of locally available ingredients in an isolated Arctic community. Fish, seal, and other locally harvested foods have an important place in East Greenlandic cooking, while imported supplies arrive only periodically by ship. The arrival of the seasonal supply vessel is therefore a notable event in town life, with residents gathering at the harbor to greet it. The name Tasiilaq comes from Greenlandic and refers to seawater that resembles a lake, an apt description of the calm waters around the town and its sheltered coastal setting.
