Vilankulo is a coastal town in Inhambane Province, southern Mozambique, facing the Indian Ocean and the Bazaruto Archipelago. Its shoreline is lined with sandy beaches, coconut palms, shallow waters, and broad views toward the islands offshore. The town serves as one of the main gateways to Bazaruto National Park, with boats departing from the coast for island excursions and marine activities. Vilankulo itself has a relaxed local setting, with markets, seafood restaurants, guesthouses, and small businesses alongside traditional fishing activity. Its airport and road connections also make it an important coastal access point.

Local life in Vilankulo is closely connected to fishing, agriculture, and the sea. Traditional dhow boats remain part of the coastal landscape and are used for fishing and trips across the waters toward the Bazaruto islands. The wider Inhambane region is known for Tsonga and Chopi cultural traditions, including timbila music, crafts, dance, and distinctive foodways. Community life also reflects the long relationship between mainland settlements and the islands offshore. Visitors can encounter this heritage in local markets, fishing areas, and community settings, where seafood, fresh produce, and handmade goods are part of everyday commerce.

The Bazaruto Archipelago is Vilankulo's main natural attraction, with five islands surrounded by coral reefs, seagrass beds, sand dunes, lagoons, and clear coastal waters. Bazaruto National Park protects important habitats for dugongs, sea turtles, dolphins, manta rays, sharks, and many bird species. From Vilankulo, visitors can reach the islands by dhow or motorboat for snorkeling, diving, fishing, birdwatching, and beach excursions. The mainland coast also supports kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing, and horseback riding. Offshore sandbanks and shallow channels create constantly changing patterns as tides move across the bay.

Seafood is central to Vilankulo's cuisine, with fresh fish, prawns, crab, and other shellfish commonly appearing in local restaurants. Coconut, cassava, maize, vegetables, and chili are also important ingredients in Mozambican cooking, while peri-peri sauces are widely associated with the country's coastal food traditions. The Bazaruto region is particularly known for high-quality fresh seafood and locally grown produce. A distinctive feature of Vilankulo is its role as a mainland gateway to one of southern Africa's important marine conservation areas. The town combines a working fishing community with direct access to protected island ecosystems and traditional dhow culture.
