Garden Route National Park is a network of protected areas along South Africa’s southern coast, bringing together the Tsitsikamma, Wilderness, and Knysna sections under one management system. The park stretches across a varied landscape of Indian Ocean coastline, indigenous forest, mountain catchments, fynbos, rivers, lakes, and estuaries. Rather than forming one continuous block, it consists of connected protected areas that include both terrestrial and marine environments. This unusual structure allows the park to conserve several distinct ecosystems while remaining closely linked with towns and communities along the Garden Route.

The park has a long human history, with San hunter-gatherers and Khoekhoe herders among the communities associated with the region before European settlement. Tsitsikamma is a Khoisan word meaning “place of much water,” reflecting the area's rivers and wet coastal environment. Forest resources also played an important role in local livelihoods, particularly around Knysna, where woodcutting shaped the history of the indigenous forest. The Forest Legends Museum at Diepwalle explores this heritage through stories of woodcutters, timber merchants, botanists, settlers, and the elusive Knysna elephant.

Each section of Garden Route National Park has distinctive landscapes. Tsitsikamma includes rocky coastline, deep river gorges, temperate forest, mountain fynbos, and a large marine protected area, while Wilderness contains interconnected lakes, rivers, wetlands, and forested hills. The Knysna section protects the important Knysna Estuary and extensive indigenous forest around Diepwalle. The park contains numerous walking routes, including the Otter Trail and forest trails around Knysna, while activities include hiking, canoeing, kayaking, birdwatching, fishing, and forest excursions. The Storms River Mouth suspension bridge is another well-known feature of the Tsitsikamma coastline.

The park’s biodiversity is reflected in its forests, fynbos, wetlands, estuaries, and marine habitats. Outeniqua yellowwoods are among the characteristic trees of the indigenous forests, while the Knysna seahorse is an endangered species found naturally only in the Knysna, Keurbooms, and Swartvlei estuaries. Birdlife includes African fish eagles, African black oystercatchers, kingfishers, herons, and several waterfowl species. The surrounding Garden Route also provides access to local seafood, farm produce, and South African dishes, while the park’s combination of coastal and forest environments makes it one of the country’s more geographically varied protected areas.
