Kirkjufellsfoss is a small series of waterfalls beside Kirkjufell mountain near Grundarfjörður on the northern coast of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The Kirkjufellsá river descends from the Helgrindur mountain range through several falls before reaching the sea, with Kirkjufell rising prominently behind them. The relationship between the waterfall and the distinctive mountain has made this one of the most recognizable landscapes in West Iceland. The site is easily reached from Route 54 and has become an important stop for visitors exploring the northern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

The landscape around Kirkjufellsfoss reflects the geological history of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Kirkjufell rises 463 meters above sea level and contains clearly visible layers shaped by volcanic activity and glacial processes. Its unusual, narrow profile has given it several names over time, including Sukkertoppen, or “Sugarloaf,” used by Danish sailors. The mountain and waterfall later gained international attention through their appearance in the television series Game of Thrones. The surrounding area, however, has long been part of the landscape around the fishing community of Grundarfjörður.

Kirkjufellsfoss is best known for the view toward Kirkjufell, with the waterfall forming a natural foreground to the isolated mountain and the waters of Breiðafjörður beyond. Several viewpoints around the falls provide different perspectives of the landscape, while the nearby town of Grundarfjörður offers access to the wider Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The area can look very different through the seasons, with long summer daylight, autumn colors, winter snow, and opportunities to see the northern lights. Kirkjufell itself should not be climbed casually, as its steep and slippery slopes and exposed rock sections make ascent hazardous.
