Angers is a city in western France, situated along the Maine River in the Loire Valley and surrounded by the vineyards and countryside of Anjou. Its historic centre combines medieval streets, elegant townhouses, and gardens with a lively university and cultural scene. The Château d'Angers is the city's defining landmark, with massive slate-coloured defensive walls overlooking the river and historic districts. Angers is also known for its extensive parks and gardens, reflecting the mild climate and long horticultural tradition of the region.

Angers has a rich heritage shaped by the Counts and Dukes of Anjou, whose influence can be seen in the city's castle, churches, and historic neighbourhoods. The Château d'Angers houses the Apocalypse Tapestry, a vast medieval work depicting scenes from the Book of Revelation. The cathedral of Saint-Maurice, with its distinctive combination of Romanesque and Gothic features, is another important landmark. Anjou's cultural identity is also connected with plant cultivation and horticulture, while the city has maintained strong associations with theatre, music, and the performing arts through venues such as the Grand Théâtre.

The Château d'Angers provides views across the city and the Maine, while its interior gardens contrast with the fortress walls. The historic Maison d'Adam, covered with carved wooden figures, is one of the city's most recognisable medieval houses. Nearby, the Galerie David d'Angers occupies the former Toussaint Abbey and displays monumental sculptures by the local artist. The Jardin du Mail and Jardin des Plantes provide green spaces within the city, while the Loire and Maine valleys offer walking and cycling routes through vineyards, wetlands, and villages. The nearby Loire Valley is also known for its castles and historic landscapes.

Food in Angers reflects the produce and traditions of Anjou. Quernons d'ardoise are blue-coloured chocolate and caramel sweets named for the slate used on local roofs, while pâté aux prunes combines pastry with the region's traditional plums. Anjou is also known for wines made from varieties such as Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, with vineyards extending through the surrounding countryside. Cointreau, the orange-flavoured liqueur, was created in Angers and remains closely associated with the city. Horticulture is another distinctive local feature, with the region recognised for nurseries, plant production, and its long tradition of garden cultivation.
