Billings, Montana sits on the edge of the vast plains and at the base of ancient sandstone cliffs known as the Rimrocks. These formations frame the city and provide miles of scenic overlooks, hiking trails, and even fossil beds. From Swords Park, visitors can walk or bike along the paved trail that follows the rim’s edge, offering sweeping views of downtown, the Yellowstone River, and distant snowcapped peaks. This same geological ridge holds secrets, pictographs and artifacts dating back thousands of years still appear in protected areas like Pictograph Cave State Park, just a short drive from town.

As Montana’s largest city, Billings has long served as a gateway to both commerce and culture in the region. The Western Heritage Center, located in a 1901 former library, showcases the city’s evolution through stories of settlers, Native tribes, and railroad workers who shaped the area. Meanwhile, downtown’s ArtWalk is held multiple times a year and transforms local galleries and businesses into open art spaces, often with live music and artist meet-and-greets. Nearby, the Moss Mansion, built in 1903, gives a glimpse into turn-of-the-century elegance with original furnishings and guided tours of its red sandstone rooms.
