Palm Desert is a city in California’s Coachella Valley, set between the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains and the Little San Bernardino Mountains. Its landscape is characterized by desert plains, palm trees, rugged mountain slopes, and irrigated areas created around residential neighborhoods and golf courses. El Paseo forms the city’s best-known commercial district, with shops, galleries, restaurants, and public art along a landscaped boulevard. The surrounding desert gives Palm Desert a distinctly arid setting, while its developed areas provide a sharp contrast to the rocky mountains and open spaces nearby.

The region has longstanding connections to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, whose ancestral lands include parts of the Coachella Valley and surrounding mountains. The Cahuilla developed extensive knowledge of desert plants, wildlife, water sources, and seasonal landscapes. Palm Desert itself grew from an agricultural and ranching area into a planned desert community, with dates, citrus, and other crops cultivated where irrigation was available. The Coachella Valley History Museum in nearby Indio preserves artifacts and exhibits related to the Indigenous, agricultural, and settlement history of the wider valley.

The Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument rises directly south of Palm Desert, protecting steep canyons, desert slopes, and higher-elevation habitats. The nearby Living Desert Zoo and Gardens combines wildlife exhibits with gardens showcasing plants from desert regions around the world. The Bighorn Sheep Trail provides access to desert terrain and mountain views, while the Palm Desert Civic Center Park offers walking paths, lawns, ponds, and recreational facilities within the city. The surrounding mountains also provide a noticeable change in vegetation as elevation increases from the hot valley floor.

Palm Desert’s food scene includes restaurants serving Mexican, Mediterranean, Asian, American, and California-style cuisine, with many establishments concentrated around El Paseo and the city’s resort areas. Dates are an important agricultural product of the Coachella Valley, while citrus and other crops are also grown in irrigated areas nearby. Golf and tennis are prominent recreational activities because of the region’s dry climate and extensive resort development. Palm Desert is also notable for its location at the meeting point of developed desert communities and protected mountain wilderness, allowing the city to function as an urban center while remaining closely connected to the surrounding Sonoran and Colorado Desert landscapes.
