Loen is a small village at the innermost end of Nordfjord in Stryn municipality, western Norway, where steep mountains, deep valleys, and glacier-fed lakes meet the fjord. The village sits beneath Mount Hoven and Skåla, with forested slopes rising sharply from the water. Its location provides easy access to both the fjord and the Lodalen valley, making the landscape unusually varied within a short distance. Loen is also surrounded by the wider glacial landscape of Jostedalsbreen, with mountain peaks, waterfalls, and valleys extending toward Norway’s largest glacier on the mainland.

Loen’s local identity is closely connected with farming, mountain travel, and the dramatic history of Lodalen. The valley contains memorials to the landslides from Ramnefjellet that caused destructive waves on Lovatnet and claimed 135 lives. Skålatårnet, a mountain tower on the summit of Skåla, reflects the area’s long tradition of mountain recreation. Hotel Alexandra, beside the fjord, is another important part of Loen’s heritage and has been welcoming visitors for generations. Together, these places connect the modern village with its agricultural, mountaineering, and hospitality traditions.

The Loen Skylift carries passengers from fjord level to Mount Hoven at 1,011 meters, providing access to hiking routes and wide views across Nordfjord and the surrounding mountains. Beyond the village, Lodalen leads to the emerald-green Lovatnet, whose distinctive color comes from glacial particles carried by meltwater. At the end of the valley, Kjenndalsbreen forms an accessible glacier destination within Jostedalsbreen National Park. Other outdoor activities include kayaking, cycling, hiking, and the Via Ferrata Loen, which climbs toward Hoven and includes a suspension bridge high above the valley.

Food in Loen reflects the farming and mountain traditions of western Norway, with local restaurants making use of lamb, dairy products, potatoes, berries, and other ingredients from the surrounding region. Traditional mountain farms, known as seter or støl, are part of the cultural landscape around the valleys and provide a connection to seasonal livestock farming. Fish from the fjord and nearby lakes also feature in regional cooking. A distinctive local experience is found at Kjenndalsstova near the end of Lodalen, where visitors can stop for traditional food and refreshments beside Lovatnet while exploring the valley and nearby glacier.
